Cultural History

Travel back in time and discover what life on the prairie was like long before the conveniences of electricity and plumbing.  This prairie town came to life in 1910.  Surrounding communities were growing, central Alberta was up and coming and was booming with coal and rich with agriculture.  People in search of a better life flocked to the prairies to start their families and their farms.  It was unknown to them at the time how harsh life on the Alberta prairies could be,  however they worked hard and put down roots.  Once they got a taste of the tight knit community of Castor, they didn't want to leave, and it shows as generation after generation have continued to put down roots and follow in their ancestors footsteps.  Today the community of Castor continues to thrive, and loves to embrace tourists, showing them old fashion small town charm.

Tour the hospital historical site

Our Lady of the Rosary Historical site.  It has stood watching over the town of Castor since 1911.  In 1911 six French speaking sisters arrived to spearhead the hospital project.  At the time it was built it was the only hospital between Red Deer and Moose Jaw, SK.  The 3rd floor served as a boarding school for kids who lived out of town. This site is definitely worth seeing! Check it out by going on your own self guided tour!  You might even spot a ghost! Indoor tours are currently closed due to preservation efforts.

Tour the Pharmacy Museum

What was originally a working drug store has been passed down through generations.  It now depicts what a working drug store looked like when the town was first founded. Tour All Saints Anglican Church

Built in 1910 when the town first began, this magnificent church is filled with prairie charm and the walls are covered with stain glass windows.  The church now operates for special occasions and tours. To book a tour call: 403-882-3271

Tour the Train Station Museum

Travel back in time at the Train Station Museum.  Tour the dentist office, hospital room, family home, and many more rooms filled with artifacts and designed to portray what life in Castor looked like in the beginning. Call the town of castor to confirm hours (403)-882-3225

Check out the Grain Elevator Historical Site

As grain elevators disappear across the province, Castor's stands proud over the town.

Explore the Castor Creek

Bring your motor boat, go swimming, rent kayaks, or have a picnic while suntanning on the beach.  These are just a few of the things you can do while taking in the beauty of the sandstone cliffs that frame this winding picturesque lake like creek. Hit the slopes at Valley Ski Hill

Located 15 minutes out of Castor in the scenic Battle River Valley, this ski hill is perfect for families or date nights.

Go Golfing

Test your luck on Castor's beautiful tree covered 9 hole golf course. There is also a tasty restaurant onsite.

Stroll through Pals Park

Stroll down paved paths that curve around ponds and over bridges in Castors extensive park system. Located in the center of the town this beautiful park will not disappoint.

Check out our Historical Walking Tours

Follow the signs around town, you can choose between several different routes of different lengths Starting at the beginning of Pals park on Main Street near Home Hardware. This is a great way to see more of Castor. Walk or bring your bike for the perfect  experience! 

Tour Beaver School and the Antique Car Shed

Experience school life in the early 1900's.  Admire some of the old cars that used to cruise the streets of Castor.  Make sure to check them out when you tour the Train Station Museum.

Go Skating

​Go skating in Castor's historic Beaverdome arena, or if you prefer outdoors go skating outside on one of Castor's cleared ponds.

Go Fishing at Huber Dam

Go fishing at the scenic Huber Dam, located 13 minutes east of Castor.

Dinner Theatre

Experience live theatre while having a delicious meal, with Castor Little Theatre.  The theatre performances usually run in late February through the first week of March.

Explore The Ghost town of Bulwark

You could easily drive past it, as only a little sign marks the turn off.  About half a mile past the old Bulwark cemetery, you will find a few run down houses and some old cars, along with a sign marking what was once a well established town. This is the perfect place for people who like to explore long lost places. Located 20 mins out of Castor.
